Summer is approaching! With the daylight hours getting longer and the temperature getting warmer you might be thinking about planning your Summer 2019 bucket list!
We’ve compiled a list of 6 mobility-friendly events, spread over central England, the South West and South Wales, to inspire you in the month of June.
All these events are a great way to spend time with the family and enjoy the summer sunshine. Whether it’s arts, culture or food events you’re looking for, June has it all.
In this list of things to do in June, we've provided information about disability access for all the events, so that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy them.
Central England
The RHS Chatsworth Flower Show
If you love the idea of the Chelsea Flower Show, why not try the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show, which is happening between the 5-9th June? This is the perfect event for garden lovers. Whether you’re looking for inspiration or for plants to build your own creation, Chatsworth will provide you with an idyllic day out.
Explore the themed gardens by some of England’s top gardeners, including the new mindfulness garden. You can also shop for your new garden furniture, that stylish garden centrepiece or new flowers and plants that suit every garden.
Within the grounds, learn about the power of trees and how they enhance our lives in the Enchanted Woodland. Relax in the woodland-inspired Talks Theatre, which will host an array of celebrities and expert speakers including Jamie Butterworth, Matt Biggs and Jonathan Moseley. The talk subjects range from horticulture and gardening to food and cooking.
Visit the Dazzling Dahlias! In front of Chatsworth House, you’ll find 6000 dahlias in full bloom to welcome you to the show.
The RHS believes that disabled visitors should have the same opportunity to enjoy the show as everyone else. The RHS has made the outdoor showground as accessible as possible.
- One companion can be admitted for free per disabled visitor.
- All marquees are accessible, and all gardens and floral exhibits can be viewed from ground level.
- Assistant dogs are welcome in all areas.
- Disabled parking is available.
- A limited number of manual wheelchairs and mobility scooters are available for use at the show and must be booked in advance: £12 for a manual wheelchair and £25 for scooter hire.
- Disability toilets are available throughout.
Leicester Riverside Festival
Taking place on the 1st-2nd June on the river Soar and Bede Park, this waterside festival is one of England’s best family-friendly events. This is a completely free event that has been running for 22 years.
Watch the competitive Dragon Boat racing, take a stroll down the river and browse the wares of local arts and crafts sellers, sample foods from around the world from the huge variety of food stalls, go to the fun fair and for the children, there will be fun activities in the Castle Gardens with an eco and environmental focus.
The festival will also be putting on family boat trips, scuba diving demos, demonstrations from Leicester Fire and Rescue Service Water Rescue Team and live jazz music! Don’t forget to stop for an afternoon tea break on the floating tea shop.
This fun-packed weekend is not to be missed!

The South West
Weston Air Festival
Head to the sandy beaches of Weston-Super-Mare to witness the spectacular displays of Weston’s famous air show. This event is happening from Saturday 22 to Sunday 23 June and it’s offering free entertainment for all the family, including parachute drops, wing walkers and the iconic RAF Red Arrows air show.
The festival celebrates the armed forces by hosting arena performances, military bands and fun fairs rides.
There is plenty to do on Weston beach including donkey rides, the land train the famous Grand Pier, the marine lake for paddling and swimming, Pirate Adventure Land and the Seaquarium. With seaside hotels and a wide choice of restaurants, cafes and shops, Weston is the perfect setting for a family mini break.
There is no disabled parking on the beach. However, limited spaces are available along Marine Parade, so we advise that you arrive early to secure your space. There is also disabled parking in surrounding car parks, the closest pay and display car park is on Carlton street which has 25 disabled bays.
Cheltenham Food Festival
Sample some of Cheltenham’s best local foods in the idyllic town setting. The annual food festival is taking place from the 14th-16th June.
Cheltenham will play host to the celebration of the best the Cotswolds has to offer for your taste buds. Sample food and drink from the 200 stalls and immerse yourself in the food and drink talks from the experts.
The festival has an environmentally friendly focus so you can learn about the friendly farming and production of the food you’re eating. This is the festival for a real foodie.
There is disability access and wheelchair access to this event, although keep in mind that the festival is held on grass at Montpellier gardens and even though it is flat there may be some uneven areas. There are also toilets for persons with disabilities. If you have a carer with you, they get free admission.

Bath Fringe Festival
This epic 17-day festival includes over 200 events from the 24th May to the 9th of June. Experience exciting acts in theatre, spoken word, circus artists, visual art events, exhibitions, comedy, film screenings, kid’s workshops and live music, modern and classical.
These events will be taking place in venues all over Bath, including secret rooms, back streets, local cafes and larger venues such as theatres and stadiums, there’s something for everyone at the Bath Fringe Festival.
