Your comfort shouldn’t have an expiration date.

That’s why, at Oak Tree Mobility, every chair is crafted with durability and longevity in mind.

Discover how long a recliner lasts and why investing in a high-quality rise and recline chair can provide long-lasting support for years to come.

Key takeaways:

  • Recliners are a significant investment, but they can last for a long time.
  • The exact lifespan depends heavily on quality, materials, and manufacturing.
  • A well-built recliner can last significantly longer than cheaper alternatives.

How long should a recliner chair last?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. A recliner’s lifespan depends on cost, quality, and usage.

Budget vs premium

Premium recliner chairs are built to a higher standard, using better quality materials. These will typically last longer than budget, mass-produced alternatives.

Daily use expectations

Frequent use can wear out the mechanism or upholstery sooner than expected. So, if you plan to use your recliner every day, it makes sense to choose a higher-end model.

Level of quality

Quality can be subjective. However, premium rise and recliners undertake strict quality control processes for maximum durability and lifespan.

The average lifespan of a recliner

Budget-end recliners may last less than five years due to the use of cheap, low-quality materials. Mid-range recliners can last a little longer, five to eight years on average.

For long-lasting comfort, it’s best to invest in a top-end recliner. Our premium, made-to-fit recliners, when properly maintained, can last for ten years or more.

How long does a ‘power recliner’ last?

The longevity of ‘power recliners’ – defined as a rise and recliner chair powered by an electronic mechanism – can vary with a few factors, including:

  • The choice of motors and mechanisms: Higher-quality motors are designed to withstand frequent use.
  • The quality of components: This matters more than you think. We produce ours in the UK, so we can keep a close eye on the quality.
  • The level of testing standards: Using premium engineering often brings stricter quality control processes.

How long do power recliner motors last?

Power recliner motors can last for years if properly maintained. The exact lifespan of a power recliner motor depends on servicing quality and correct use, e.g. avoiding overloading.

How long does a recliner chair last with daily use?

The lifespan of a chair that’s used every day can depend on:

  • Daily usage expectations: Using the chair for long periods each day will wear it out faster than occasional use.
  • Wear patterns: Constant resting of the forearms could cause wear on the armrests, while daily sitting may lead to sagging in the seat.
  • Weight distribution: A well-designed chair allows you to distribute your weight evenly, reducing strain on key components.
  • Heavier usage: Models with heavy-duty framing and high-density foam offer added longevity.
  • Structural integrity: When built to a high standard, your chair should withstand daily use with ease.

What impacts the lifespan of a recliner?

Build quality

High-quality frame materials, joint construction, and reinforcement provide long-lasting comfort and support.

Fabric or leather

The choice of materials and factors like foam density can affect lifespan – see our guide on leather vs fabric chairs for more details.

Frequency of use

How often you use your chair (e.g. whether it’s used every day or occasionally) is a key factor. More frequent motor use can increase the need for repairs and replacement.

Weight limits

Exceeding the weight limit can cause damage. At Oak Tree Mobility, our standard chairs support up to 18 stone, but capacity can be increased to 25 stone through an upgraded motor and reinforced steelwork.

Improper use

Make sure your recliner isn’t accessible for children or pets, and never try to force the motor.

Maintenance and servicing

Book a yearly service to keep your recliner in good working order.

Environment

Keep your recliner in a clear, non-restrictive space that’s easy to clean, and place it away from a window to avoid fabric discolouration from sunlight.

Warranty and aftercare

Having invested in your new furniture, it’s only natural that you will want to keep it looking like new for as long as possible. That’s why we offer customers a 5 Year Protect Plus Plan – find out more here.

Signs it's time to replace a recliner

  • Loss of comfort and support.
  • Worn upholstery and sagging cushions.
  • Wobbling or an unsteady frame.
  • Electrical faults, including a noisy mechanism.

Quality-made recliners are designed with quiet operation, smooth transitions, and reduced strain on components in mind – meaning you won’t have to replace them as frequently.

How to extend the life of your recliner chair

  • Don’t exceed the chair’s weight limit. Overloading can cause damage.
  • Regularly service moving parts to keep your chair working as it should.
  • If your chair has leather upholstery, use a leather care kit to stop it from drying out.

FAQs about how long recliner chairs last

How long does a recliner usually last?

The lifespan of a rise and recliner depends on a range of factors, but a premium model can last for ten years or more.

Do power recliners wear out faster?

Power recliner chairs don’t necessarily wear out faster than manual recliners. High-quality recliners can last longer as less strain is put on the frame due to smoother, controlled movements.

 Are leather recliners more durable?

Leather recliners are generally more durable than fabric recliners. However, the lifespan depends on the overall quality.

Can recliner motors be replaced?

Recliner motors can be replaced easily. This is usually performed by your recliner technician if under warranty.

How often should a recliner be serviced?

It’s best to have your rise and recliner serviced once a year. Even if there are no issues, a yearly service helps keep it in optimal working condition.

Is it worth repairing an old recliner?

Whether it’s worth repairing an older recliner depends on the nature of the repair. For older chairs that need extensive work, it may be best to upgrade to a higher-quality model.
