Bed Sheet

The type of sheets you need for an adjustable bed depends on the depth of your mattress and whether you have a longer bed than average. While most adjustable beds don’t require special sheets, finding linen that’s the right size and fabric can make a big difference to its durability and your comfort.

In this guide we’ll explore the variety of bed sheets available and their benefits. We’ll also share helpful tips on how to choose, care for and extend the life of your bed sheets so you can get the best possible night’s sleep.

What sheets are best for adjustable beds?

Adjustable beds are designed to move their position to provide comfort and support while sleeping or resting. This means you might need to buy sheets with features that keep them on the mattress as it moves with the adjustable base.

Fitted sheets with deep pockets

Fitted sheets with deep pockets stay in place on the mattress even if the bed moves. As adjustable beds often have thicker mattresses or may require extra fabric to accommodate movement, the elastic edges on deep pocket fitted sheets will help keep it in place.

Sheets with elastic corner straps

Elastic corner straps will help keep your sheet securely in place as the bed moves. Stretching diagonally across each corner of your mattress, they’re also useful for people that toss and turn a lot in their sleep. By minimising rucking or movement of the sheet, elastic corner straps help maintain comfort.

High quality elastic bands

Attachable sheet fasteners or clips

Sheet fasteners are stretchable bands with clips that keep the four corners of your sheet from lifting or popping off during the night. It's best to clip the straps across the adjustable bed mattress in a criss-cross pattern. Once they’re in place, make sure they’re fitted tightly to keep your sheets properly secured.

Waterproof bed sheets

For an extra layer of protection, consider waterproof bed sheets. Designed to shield your mattress from spills, stains or sweat, they will help keep your bed in top condition. Typically made from a soft, breathable fabric, waterproof bed sheets allow for a great level of comfort while providing a strong barrier against moisture.

Benefits of hospital bed sheets

Hospital bed sheets offer a range of practical benefits including durability, hygiene and easy care. Made from high-quality fabrics, they can resist lots of wear and tear and frequent washing at high temperatures. The fabrics are also soft, breathable and wrinkle-resistant, ensuring maximum comfort whilst you sleep in your adjustable bed.

How to choose adjustable bed sheets

From finding the perfect fit for your mattress size to choosing fabrics that match your sleep preferences, there are several factors to consider when buying adjustable bed sheets.

Select your fabric

Choosing the best material for bed sheets is very personal to you. For example, do you prefer a silky-smooth sheet or that hotel-crisp linen feeling? Below is a quick guide to help you choose a quality, comfortable bed sheet material with one being lowest, five being highest.

Find the right thread count

Thread count is the number of warp (length) and weft (width) threads per square inch. As a rule, the higher the thread count, the softer the fabric. Thread count will also alter depending on the thickness of the yarn used for the fabric.

Aim to find sheets with a thread count of 200 or higher, anything below this may feel stiff and scratchy depending on the fabric. Although, if you’re opting for a linen sheet, you’ll want a sheet with a lower thread count.

MaterialRecommended Thread Count
Cotton200 to 500
Egyptian Cotton300 to 500
Silk400+
Bamboo300 to 500
Tencel270 to 300
Polyester400 to 600
Linen80 to 150
Percale200 to 400
Sateen300 to 600

Know your mattress size

Bed sheets are tailored to fit specific mattress dimensions. If your sheet isn’t big enough for your mattress, it can pop off or bunch up as you move in your sleep, leading to frustration and a lack of comfort.

Standard mattress sizes include single, twin, double, king and queen, but the depth of your mattress is also an important factor. Especially if you have additional supports like a pillow top mattress, mattress protector or heated blanket.

Measure the width, depth and length of your mattress to ensure your sheets will fit snugly and stay put on your adjustable bed.

How to care for your bed sheets

There is nothing like hopping into a bed with fresh sheets ready for a restful night’s sleep. To enjoy that hotel-fresh-sheet-feeling, here are a few handy tips to help you look after your new linens.

  • Change your sheets regularly. Once a week will keep your bed feeling fresh and won’t lead to overwashing, which can shorten the lifespan of your sheets
  • Once your sheets have been for a spin in the washing machine, remove them as quickly as possible so they don’t pick up any odours
  • If you’re drying your sheets on a clothes horse or drying rack, give them as much space to air as possible. When using a tumble dryer, make sure you choose the right cycle for your sheet fabric
  • Avoid folding away freshly-washed sheets too quickly. Make sure they’re completely dry before stashing them in the cupboard. This will help you avoid any damp smells from building up If possible, give your mattress some time to air without being covered. For example, strip your bed in the morning and make it up just before going to sleep. This will help prevent bad odours from forming in your mattress

When to replace your bed sheets

Replacing your sheets every two to three years is recommended. Although if you start to notice your sheets are fading, discoloured or starting to thin, they will need replacing. Naturally, sheets that are high quality will last longer, so it’s best to avoid buying cheap sheets where you can.

Investing in a few sets of bedding to have in rotation also helps you avoid overwashing and extends the lifespan of your sheets.
