What is a Zimmer frame?

A Zimmer frame is a walking aid that supports people with mobility problems as they move independently around or outside their home. Made from lightweight plastic or metal with rubber feet, they give people extra stability and balance by helping support their body weight.

Although it’s now used interchangeably with the term ‘walking frame’, the name ‘Zimmer frame’ comes from one of the original manufacturers, Zimmer Biomet. There are no differences in the design of a standard walking frame and a Zimmer frame. However, there are several types of walking frames to choose from. So it’s essential you find one that supports your unique mobility needs.

What are Zimmer frames used for?

Zimmer frames are used by people with limited mobility, illness or injuries to get around. For example, they may be used to support people’s balance as they recover from a stroke or when they’re suffering from arthritis. Zimmer frames transfer 64% of the user's weight to their arms through the supportive structure, relieving some of the pressure placed on the legs and feet.

This makes the Zimmer frame a much more comfortable alternative to crutches or a walking stick. Walking frames are ideal for mobility at home, although they’re not recommended for use over too long distances. If the user has enough stability, they could use a wheeled walker for longer trips. Alternatively, for maximum comfort, safety and independence, they could use a mobility scooter.

How to use a Zimmer frame correctly

It is important to know how to use a Zimmer frame correctly so that you can be safe and reduce the risk of an accident.

When standing up

Remember to always push up from your seating surface with your legs. Do not pull yourself onto the frame in case it falls back and causes injury. When standing, use the hand grips on either side of the frame.

When sitting down

Turn yourself with the frame until your seat or bed is touching the back of your legs. Reach your hands back to the armrests or bed, and gently lower yourself to a seated position.

When walking

Gently move your frame one step forward ahead of you, but be careful not to place it too far ahead. Step into the frame with one foot in front of the other. When you feel secure, move the frame one step ahead again. You should not walk too far into the frame, as you could be at risk of tipping forward.

What is the correct height for a walking frame?

The correct height for a walking frame is at wrist level when you’re standing with your arms extended. Every walking frame should have adjusters at the sides so you can bring it up or down easily.

Rollator frame vs Zimmer frame: What are the differences?

The main difference between a Zimmer frame and a rollator is that a rollator is fully wheeled. In contrast, a Zimmer frame has either four static feet or two wheels on the front legs.

A Zimmer frame with wheels is a hybrid of the traditional walker and a rollator. The wheels at the front allow you to move the frame without lifting it fully off the ground. With the back two legs in direct contact with the ground, the frame can safely support your body weight and balance. They do, however, require more upper body strength and grip to hold the frame securely.

Rollators feature four wheels and brakes attached to the handles. This allows you to move forward without having to lift the frame. As such, rollators should not be used to support your body weight or balance due to the risk of wheels moving too far ahead of you. However, they are useful for those struggling with grip or upper body strength. They also typically feature a seat and storage, which can be helpful on trips outside of the house.

How to use a walking frame with wheels correctly

If you choose to use a rollator or hybrid Zimmer frame with wheels, then it’s important not to use it to bear your full weight, as it will roll ahead of you and cause imbalance. Always keep your feet in the middle of the frame while making sure your stomach doesn’t touch it. This is the ideal position to make sure you stay balanced and supported without the walker wheeling too far ahead, even if you use it for partial weight bearing.

When walking forward, you can use the same method as a standard Zimmer frame, but you just push it forward rather than lifting and placing it. Again, make sure the frame doesn’t get too far away or too close to you. When you’re standing up or sitting down from a chair, don’t hold the handles of the frame. Instead, get the frame in position and use the arms of a chair to lift or lower yourself.

We understand that your mobility needs are unique to you. We always recommend consulting your doctor about any health concerns and trying a range of solutions to find your perfect frame.
